Coaching Essentials

Supporting Success

During my tenure with the M&T Program, I experienced the nuances of each semester of college firsthand as well as the one-on-one guidance students need to excel at any given point in their university life. Although universities would like to provide such individually-tailored assistance to each student, it is generally too cost and time prohibitive to do so. Below is a curated list of skills I discuss with students to help foster a smooth transformation to college, ensure a positive and productive college experience, manage stress, and make the most of their university experience while utilizing all the resources available to them.

  • Goals

  • Expectations

  • Best Practices from High School

  • Major(s)

  • Strengths

  • Time Management

  • Semester Planning

  • Well-Being and Stress Management

  • Resilience

  • Networking

In a perfect world a student’s college support team would be in place prior to the start of the academic year. For this support to be proactive instead of reactive, it is most beneficial to meet with students in the summer to establish a strong bond with them and maintain this bond throughout their college career. In my experience, students need this type of support. Since the world is not perfect and challenges occur unexpectedly, I am available to assist students at any stage of their college career. College is expensive and expectations of students are great. If students encounter issues or make mistakes, far too often they do not know where to seek assistance or feel embarrassed about asking for help. As an impartial adult, I will check in with your student regarding their academic progress, their well-being, their goal development, challenges they are experiencing, social integration, troubleshooting sickness, studying abroad and summer internship opportunities, add/drop/withdraw deadlines, and more. Although the goal from the start will be an enriched college career, the development of a healthy lifestyle with powerful life skills will benefit the student in all future relationships and endeavors.
